JOHN LYNCH FAN

THE ORIGINAL LYNCHBURG FAN CLUB

If you love this city, you have to respect the man who started it. John Lynch wasn't just a guy with a ferry; he was a trailblazer who believed in community, grace, and hard work. We are building a city that actually makes its founder proud.

Most cities are named after politicians or kings. Ours is named after a rebel with a massive heart.

It is easy to drive past the historical markers without reading them, but if you actually look at the resume of John Lynch, it’s impossible not to be a fan. He set a standard for this city that we are still chasing today:

  • He was a community entrepreneur: He didn't wait for the government to build infrastructure; he started a ferry service across the James River to connect people and foster a local economy.

  • He stood up for human dignity: In a time when it was incredibly unpopular and economically risky, John Lynch was a fierce abolitionist who actively freed slaves. He chose doing what was right over doing what was easy.

  • He was a radical peacemaker: When faced with the tragic death of his own son, he reportedly chose to forgive the man responsible. He refused to let bitterness build his legacy.

HOW TO JOIN THE FAN CLUB

You don't need a membership card to be a John Lynch fan—you just need a deeply rooted love for your neighbors and a willingness to roll up your sleeves. If we want to honor the original vision for Lynchburg, we have to carry that torch today. Here is what it means to be a modern fan of John Lynch’s city:

  1. Foster the Gathering Places: John Lynch donated land so his neighbors had a place to meet and connect. Today, we honor that by actively supporting our local restaurants, small businesses, and public parks. We believe a great city is built on strong, vibrant, and safe neighborhoods where people actually want to spend time together.

  2. Tear Down the Roadblocks: John was a pioneer who built a way across the river. Today, we honor that entrepreneurial spirit by making it easier for the next generation of job creators to open their doors. We believe City Hall should be a partner to our local businesses, not a maze of bureaucratic red tape.

  3. Cultivate Optimism and Grace: John chose unity over division. Today, we honor that by rejecting toxic, national-style political theater at the local level. We believe that when neighbors work together, there is absolutely no limit to what this city can achieve.
